Usability Study of a Portal Feature for Amazon.com

We planned, conducted, and analyzed the results of our study based on the goals of Amazon to

  • provide a rich experience for users interested in a particular content area, using entity pages
  • sell more products

Our team of students—from the Master’s-level usability class in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering at the University of Washington—conducted an extensive usability test on Amazon Author Entities to collect information about how users search for information about authors with whom they are not familiar, including user search behavior, Entity discoverability, and, more generally, perceptions of Entity user experience. Discovering problems in usability provide the basis for recommendations that will allow the Author Entities (and potentially Entity pages in general) to accomplish Amazon’s goals of providing content-rich experiences and selling more products.
